For a more extensive shopping trip, head for Exeter, where you’ll find the Princesshay, Guildhall and Harlequins shopping centres, as well as the designer bargains of the Atlantic Village Outlet in Bideford. Exeter is home to Exeter Airport, with flights across the UK and Europe, and you can also pick up the M5 here for all routes north and east.

Trains from Exeter reach Bristol in 1hr, London Paddington in as little as 2hrs 10mins and Birmingham in around 2½hours. Following the recent problems with the mainline from Exeter to Plymouth, where it was washed away at Dawlish, Network Rail are considering reinstating services via Okehampton as an alternative route, which would make the town even better connected.
